Hello, Daisies! Finally, I am revealing my home office makeover…gold office, that is! As I shared in a previous post, I was losing my mind over the state of my home office and lack of productivity because of it. I needed to be inspired by the space…and it just wasn’t happening (you can see why in the photos below). Naturally, I turned to Pinterest and began to come up with a space that would inspire (or at least dazzle and distract). Behold…my gold office makeover, including super easy DIY projects.
Gold Office Makeover – The Beast Before
Let’s start with the slate…my office is white and red. The most awful red you’ve ever seen (and unevenly painted, to boot). It makes the room dark and angry. I have plans for addressing that blood smear over half of my office, but it wasn’t in the cards for this round. That being the case, I was determined to brighten the room by playing on the white upper walls with bright and cheerful artwork and accessories and rearranging the artwork that I already have.
Very little in my office matched or coordinated and was a hodge podge of things I’ve collected over the years between my home office and former office building offices. No wonder I couldn’t stand to work in there. It didn’t help matters any when my “office” became my storage unit with a small path (if you want to call it that) to my desk chair.
I read Leanne’s “New Office Reveal” post on her blog, Classy Yet Trendy, and the bell finally rang. Her gorgeous, clean, bright office was just the inspiration that I needed to do something about this mess. (As my mother would have said, if I had good sense, I’d be ashamed.)
First things first…I piled everything into the middle of the floor and sorted through it ALL. I was my garbage collector’s nightmare for two weeks as I cleared out years of crud. I donated a lot of things, like clothes and books, and recycled and shredded other things. That process freed a huge amount of space, clutter, and that overwhelming drowning feeling. The items that had no business being in my office found appropriate homes (a task that I was dreading, but wasn’t so bad split up over the weeks). Now, I have room for a filing cabinet and chair and table by the window, which are next on the list.
Gold Office Makeover – The Plan
White and Gold. It’s just that simple. White and gold was the palette I wanted for my new office with sprinkles of color (turquoise, pinks, blues). You would think that that would be easy enough with the popularity of gold office accessories, but not so much.
Two things began to pose a problem for my plan: 1) the things that I was finding for my makeover were oka-a-ay, but weren’t exactly what I wanted (despite their hodge podginess, I liked a lot of my own office accessories); and 2) it was about to get really costly to create my dream office.
I am NOT a DIY girl. I am so artistically challenged that it is not even funny. Still, I wanted my dream office and wasn’t about to splash the money to buy all new stuff…especially if it wasn’t exactly what I wanted. After some more Pinterest inspiration, it dawned on me that I could create my own office accessories and decor using the pieces that I loved with a little help…and without a Martha Stewart ability.
Gold Office Makeover – Super Easy DIY Projects
Rust-Oleum® to the rescue! I did a little research and located Rust-Oleum’s PR contact and, on a wing and a prayer, submitted my idea for collaborating with them for my office makeover. To my surprise and delight, the good people at Rust-Oleum responded and sent me an entire case of their Specialty Metallic Spray in Gold. (I thought it would be super sweet if they sent me a coupon for a can, so you know that I was floored.)
The ideas began flooding in. I knew that I wanted one of those cute gold magnetic boards that I’d seen and wanted to lighten up my bookcase with gold accessories. Then, there was lighting, desk accessories, frames…I went gold bling crazy, no doubt.
My DIY projects were easy enough that even I could manage not to mess up. (That is saying more than you can imagine, trust me.) The most difficult were the desk and floor lamp only because of the taping that I had to do to protect the bulb and lamp areas.
The magnetic board took a little time for me to get the tape lined up and laying evenly for the pattern I wanted. Once the second coat was dry, I removed the tape and had my gold magnetic board for a fraction of the cost of the smaller ones that I’d seen. Everything else was a matter of avoiding the spray because it was windy. Easy peasy, pudding pie.
Like I said, I went gold crazy. In addition to my magnetic dry erase board (similar one from Target here), I turned all of these things that I touched to gold:
- Threshold™ Rustic Wire 2-Drawer Organizer
- Realspace Contemporary Lamp
- Floor lamp (old, but here is a newer and nicer version)
- Post-it® Dispenser with Photo Frame
- Realspace Black Leatherette Desk Pad
- Black wood boxes from Hobby Lobby (similar crates sold as a set here)
- Picture frames
- Office Depot Drawer cart
- Office Depot wire mesh waste basket
- Threshold Small Milk Crate Wire Basket
I considered making my desk gold too, but thought better of it. (It was a present from the husband when we were first married, and I don’t think that he would have been as jazzed as I about the makeover.) I also decided not to alter my Threshold™ Small and Large Wood Milk Crates with Chalkboard and Black and White Chalk Art Storage Box Set.
Gold Office Makeover – Rounding Out the Decor
I wanted to include original artwork that represented my style and coordinated better with my new gold office, so I went on an Etsy hunt. I am simply amazed at the talent of these artists–all artists. I selected my first three pieces (oh, yes, my wish list is extensive now), which I absolutely adore. I want to give a shout out to all of the artists:
Elise Engh, Grow Creative: Blue and Gold Watercolor Wildflowers.
You cannot get this particular piece because Elise’s works are one of a kind, but browse her Etsy shop, Grow Creative Watercolor Shop, for her other beautiful works. Be sure to check out Elise’s blog, Grow Creative, too. It was all about the gold and blues when I saw this piece and knew that it had found its home. I have another one of Elise’s works on my coveting list, but I’m afraid to tell you which one, so I’ll keep it to myself for now. (I know, I’m all about sharing the daisies in life, but I really want this daisy for myself. I make no apologies.)
Vicki, Sublime Fresh Prints: Daisies Genuine FOIL Art Print Trendy Modern Floral Home Wall Decor.
I think that it should be kind of obvious why I fell in love with this print aside from the gold foil, right? Vicki’s Etsy shop, SUBLIMEfresh, is filled with beautiful prints. Bonus: Vicki offers different size and finish options for many of her prints.
As odd as it may seem, I have an obsession with Gone With the Wind and Scarlett O’Hara (note the Scarlett O’Hara and Her Suitors collector’s plate on the bookcase shelf in the photos below). When this little beauty found its way into my Etsy search results for “gold prints”, I instantly hit the add-to-cart button. No more needs to be said.
You can find more of Anna’s beautiful prints (including some amazing block art prints), cards, DIY kits, and home decor on her website, annasee.com. Anna also carries adorable apparel and a curated line of organic natural bath and body products (some of them made exclusively for her).
When you find something you love on annasee.com (because I know that you will), be sure to use the special discount code that Anna is sharing with my readers–THANX15–for 15% off of your purchase.
I picked up additional office accessories here and there to round out my gold office theme. Here are some of my finds:
And, of course, you know that I invested in a new planner and switched to the Day Designer if you read my post from Saturday.
Gold Office Makeover – Finally, the Full Reveal
I still have a few more things that I want to do before it is completely finished, but I am finally happy with my home office and happy to work in it. Now, if I can just stop looking at all of the pretty things and do my work.
I want to hear from you! What does your dream office look like? Share in the comments.
